SAUGUS – After last week?s armed robbery at the Saugusbank on Route 1 and ensuing manhunt and shootout, a look back at police records show Saugus has been a frequent target of bank bandits.Since February 2009, there have been 14 bank robberies, seven of which occurred at the Eastern Bank at 605 Broadway.Assistant Saugus Police Chief Leonard Campanello said Route 1 presents “a lot of opportunity” for potential bank robberies.?We have a lot of banks in Saugus and there are many routes that criminals can take out of there,” Campanello said. “I think naturally Saugus would probably would have more robberies just because of the fact we have more banks.”Click to view a map of the banks robbed in Saugus since February 2009. Police killed a third suspect, 35-year-old William Ekasala of East Boston during a shootout in a Malden parking lot.The Federal Bureau of Investigation along with a SWAT team and several other area police departments fanned out around Malden in search of a possible additional suspect that night, but a press release from the Middlesex District Attorney?s office said reports of a fourth suspect were “mistaken.”?While reports of a fourth possible suspect have circulated since the incident, a subsequent investigation, which included examining physical evidence from the crime scenes and conducting witness interviews into the credibility of the report has resulted in the conclusion that a fourth suspect does not exist,” said the release.Megna was arraigned in Malden District Court Monday and held on $1 million bail while Ginnietti was also held on $1 million bail after a dangerousness hearing in Lynn District Court on Friday.Saugusbank President Kevin M. Tierney said bank staff were shaken after the robbery, but are “reacting and responding well” and noted bank customers shouldn?t be concerned for their safety.?We have a comprehensive set of training procedures and security procedures that are already in place,” Tierney said. “The Saugus Police and other law enforcement agencies did a terrific job in their response and follow-up to the incident.”Campanello said the latest robbery won?t change how police approach bank robberies and said, while people should always be aware of their surroundings, he also doesn?t think residents should be concerned.?I don?t think there?s any bigger threat walking into a bank here than anywhere else,” said Campanello. In 22 years with the Saugus Police Department, Campanello said it?s been a long time since an officer had to fire a gun in the line of duty.?I can?t remember a time in the recent past where they had to discharge their weapons in the course of doing police work,” Campanello said. “Not in recent history.”Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
