SAUGUS – A new deli on Hamilton Street in Saugus has its new owner hoping to make a comeback in town.Saugus Deli opened about two weeks ago and owner Moujib Hamza said his new store, which is located next to the BP gas station on Hamilton Street, has a little bit of everything? It?s mostly a deli,” said Hamza. “We do sandwiches plus we have a market with produce and vegetables. I have a lot of paninis, wraps, sandwiches, fresh salads. Everything is fresh quality, it?s the right price and clean. We have pasta salad and we sell milk.”Hamza?s sister-in-law, Hala Akwan, works with him at the deli, and said they used to operate a convenience store on Lincoln Avenue, but had to close down after a 7-11 moved in nearby.?We opened a White Hen Pantry in 2004, but when 7-11 came over he ruined the deli and took everything,” said Akwam. While the deli is fairly small, it?s fully stocked with a produce section that includes peppers, eggplant, oranges, apples and even pineapple.Saugus Deli also features a dairy section and fresh French and Italian bread along with Italian cookies and a pasta rack. The menu features sandwiches including the Hamilton Street Special which has sliced corned beef, pastrami and mozzarella cheese or the chicken pesto panini, which comes with grilled chicken breast coated in pesto sauce with roasted red peppers and provolone cheese.Akwam said Saugus Deli has been busy since opening and building a loyal following.?All of my customers are coming back,” said Akwam. “We have a lot of customers.”Saugus Deli is opened from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
