SWAMPSCOTT – As far as wins go, this was a little out of the ordinary. The Swampscott High baseball team defeated Austin Prep, 7-6, in eight innings at the Forest Avenue Fields in MIAA Division 3 North first-round action Thursday. The way it unfolded wasn’t exactly standard operating procedure. In the bottom of the eighth, Swampscott player Nick Meninno led off with a single. This brought up Corey Carmody, who had come up to pinch-hit in the sixth. Carmody reached on a misplayed bunt, putting runners at first and second and prompting a call of “That was Blue-tiful” from the crowd in praise of Swampscott’s hustle.Gino Cresta then attempted a sacrifice bunt. Meninno broke for third, but turned around. With the shortstop covering second, Austin Prep pitcher Tyler Finnegan accidentally threw the ball through the vacated spot and into left field. Meninno wound up scoring the game-winning run.”Gino was bunting and everyone practices,” Swampscott coach T.J. Baril said. “(Meninno) got a good read and a good jump. We were fortunate we could capitalize on the miscue.”Next up is a Monday quarterfinal game against the North Reading-Bedford winner.Meninno also got the win on the mound, coming in to relieve starter Sean O’Brien an inning earlier.Swampscott trailed 6-4 after Austin scored two in the fifth to break a 4-4 tie. Mike Walsh made it a one-run game with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.”The kid was starting everybody off with curveballs,” Walsh said. “I got one curveball, I was expecting another. It was a 1-0 count. It came right down the middle of the plate. I got a good swing on it.”In the bottom of the seventh, Robert Serino led off with a single. With Trevor Massey up, Serino stole second and, on an errant pickoff throw, he took third too. After a conference on the mound, Massey hit a deep sacrifice fly. The Blue had a chance for more after O’Brien hit a two-out single, but Austin caught a runner stealing for the third out.Austin Prep took a 2-0 lead after one and doubled that lead to 4-0 after two. Swampscott whittled away, cutting it to 4-2 after three innings on RBI singles from Frank Legere and Walsh. The Blue had a runner thrown out at the plate in that inning. In the fourth, Meninno led off with a single. Justin Perry hit a shot to center that scored Meninno, but Perry was called out on interference. Cresta reached on a two-base error and, with two out, stole third. Legere then delivered a game-tying double. As it turned out, the teams were just getting started.Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
