LYNNFIELD – With a late rally, including a 3-run bottom of the fifth, Lynnfield defeated St. Mary’s, 4-2, in MIAA Division 3 North baseball quarterfinal action Tuesday.”I’ll give St. Mary’s credit,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said. “Their pitcher (Sean Buckland) was right on. We just happened to get a couple key hits when we needed it.”Next up is a semifinal showdown between teams from neighboring communities: Lynnfield and Bishop Fenwick (Thursday at Alumni Field, Lowell, 4).”Fenwick’s a fantastic team,” O’Brien said. “Mr. Canty (Crusaders coach Kevin Canty) played for me, as did two of his assistants. They’ve done a great job.”Lynnfield entered the bottom of the fifth trailing 1-0, but scored three times to go up 3-1. With one out, B.J. Neil singled. Neil stole second and Jordan Roper walked. Pete Franchi hit an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1, with Roper taking third.Heads-up baserunning by Roper prompted St. Mary’s to throw to third, and Lynnfield ended up with runners on second and third. Carmine DiCesare fouled off six straight pitches before hitting a sacrifice fly to score Roper and give Lynnfield the lead, with Franchi taking third.Craig Anderson reached on an error, and Franchi scored the Pioneers’ third run for a 3-1 lead.St. Mary’s drew within one in the bottom of the frame, when Kurtis White led off with a double and Joe Kasper reached on a one-out infield hit. White scored on a botched rundown that left a runner at second. Yet Pioneers starter Chris DeHuelle (complete-game win, 1 BB, 2 K) got the next two outs.In the top of the sixth, Lynnfield made it a 2-run game again. John Festa reached on a 2-base error and Chris Lang bunted him to third. That prompted St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana to change pitchers from Buckland to White. White got the second out, but with Neil at the plate, a wild pitch scored Festa.Lynnfield had a chance for more after Neil reached on an error, Roper singled, and a passed ball put Neil at third.
