LYNN – With over 130 runners participating, the Lynn Woods Handicap created a vibrant scene on Wednesday night.Click here for a photo gallery.Organizer Bill Mullen, and Handicap founder Joe Abelon, worked to assign runners starting times based on their performance in previous races in the Lynn Woods Summer Cross Country series, with the slower-paced runners going in the initial wave (“zero time”) and the fastest-paced runner, Caleb Evanter of Marblehead, beginning the race 28 minutes after the gun.”He’ll pass a lot,” Abelon said before the first runner crossed the finish line, “but whether he’ll pass anyone who started at zero time, we don’t know.”A clock posted near the starting line alerted runners as to what time they should begin the race.Inside his truck parked in the Great Woods Road lot, Abelon tracked runners’ times – the “gun” time, which marked the time they crossed the finish line after the gun, or in this case the cowbell; and the “corrected” time, meaning their finish factoring in what time they started. Next to the truck, Mullen placed an array of trophies on a table.”The course was good and fast,” said Paul Gouthro of Lynn, who is training for the Marine Corps Marathon. “Not only did you have a chance to catch (people), you knew people behind were chasing you.”Gouthro ran at a 9-minute-mile handicap and finished in 29th place.Winner Cheryl Mulvey of Boxford fielded congratulations after her finish.”I’ve run (Lynn Woods) many times,” she said. “I owe it all to Bill Mullen. He does a wonderful job. I owe a lot to Bill, and Joe.”Mulvey, Dean Malerba of Lynnfield and Colin Durina of Lynn took the top three spots. In addition to the handicap, there were two other races at the Woods last night: a 2.69-mile “Steel Tower” race and a 1.59-mile Kids Race. Ted Kennedy of Swampscott won the Steel Tower race (19:59), followed by Meghan Clancy of Lynn (21:58) and David Quinn of Lynn (22:07). In the Kids Race, it was a 1-2-3 finish from the 9-year-old McDonough triplets of Nahant: Maxwell, 19:37; Bradley, 21:34; and Alexander, 22:13.Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
