SWAMPSCOTT – The Planning Board voted unanimously to move forward favorably with the Temple Israel project despite criticism from neighbors Tuesday evening.Paul Minsky and Charles Donoghue, both of Orchard Road, stood to show their opposition of the project.Even with the reduction in the number of single-family homes from 19 to 14, “It?s just way too big ? it?s just too many houses for such a little area,” Minsky said. “It?s a shame that we spent so much money buying it and now we are trying to make it right. I know they have good intentions but I think it?s a terrible project.”When Attorney Michael Callahan, who is representing developers Charing Cross Realty Trust, asked Minsky if he would favor any development on the property, Minsky replied, “Not at this time, no.”Minsky said he would be in favor of putting in plots of trees on the land.Donoghue said “under good zoning law” the action to allow 14 units on the property was spot zoning. “No matter how you crunch these numbers, they?re going to be tiny,” said Donoghue. “It?s clearly not good zoning. I don?t know anybody in my neighborhood who supports this.”Project Manager Bill Luster of Atlantic Crossing said at the public meeting held Aug. 27, neighbors were in support of the amendments of the project.Though the board voted to “recommend favorable action on the amendment to forward to Town Meeting,” Vice Chairman Angela Ippolito told Donoghue he should bring his comments to Town Meeting so voters could consider the opposition to the project when deciding how to vote.?That?s really the forum where we go to discuss these ideas ? in terms of making a difference,” said Ippolito. “I think there?s going to be people who feel both ways.”Board member Sylvia Belkin added that she wished there was a billboard in Swampscott where project developments could be posted so the town could be more informed to avoid criticism late in the game. “We would have been much more public much earlier on,” said Belkin. “These things take on a life of their own, and before you know it it?s a done deal.”Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
