MIDDLETON — The St. Mary’s football team celebrated its Catholic Central League championship at its annual banquet Tuesday night at Angelica’s Restaurant.
Last fall, the Spartans won their first-ever CCL/Large championship, having moved from the small division after the 2005 season.
Two-way lineman Andres Rodriguez, who was The Item’s defensive player of the year at December’s banquet, won the Spartan Award, signifying the team’s most valuable player. During his career at St. Mary’s, several running backs — including Todd and Jordan Collier, Jordan Manthorne and Cory Donahue — had 1,000-yard seasons rushing behind Rodriguez.
Other award winners were Manthorne, defensive MVP; Jordan Collier, offensive MVP; Nick Lee, McManus Memorial Award; Michael Daly, Msgr. John Dillon Day Memorial Award; Charlie Beaton and Alec Gunning, coaches awards; Scott Betts, most dedicated; Rodolfo Jiminez, top defensive lineman; Jack Leonard, top offensive lineman; John Gaeta, Ironman; Connor Sakowich, unsung player; Brian O’Connor, team spirit; Jake Cassidy, offensive rookie of the year; Luc Zikianda, defensive rookie of the year; Austin Harvey, special teams; Brent Lozzi, scout team offense; Marvin Bony, scout team defense.
JV awards went to Ben Martin, defensive MVP, Paul Halas, offensive MVP; Christian Abarca, offensive line MVP; Connor Yildiran, defensive line MVP; and Chris Hayward, coaches award.
Freshman awards went to Kyle Smith, defensive MVP; Leo Guerrero, offensive MVP; Andrew Evans, best lineman; Jack Stacey, offensive coaches award; and Anthony Luongi, defensive coaches award.
Cheerleading awards went to Jade Johnson, most improved; Becca Hart, coaches award; and Jolicia Gode, spirit.
Scholar/Athlete awards went to Andrew Evans, freshman; Gaeta and Sakowich, sophomores; Abarca, junior; and Daly, senior.
