The snow that fell across the North Shore on Monday night was not enough to sustain cross country skiing. There was just too much grass peeking out from the snow on Tuesday for me to even think about taking the skis out.Luckily, farther north, the conditions sound better for cross country skiing.”I think the temperatures will be back to ones that we expect for this time of year by the weekend, sounds like highs around 20 or in that range, still a ways off though,” said Karl Stone, marketing director of Ski New Hampshire, a statewide association that represents 33 alpine and cross country ski resorts. The Granite State is home to many winter attractions, including the Bretton Woods resort by Mount Washington; and Waterville Valley, the self-proclaimed birthplace of freestyle skiing. I still recall a freezing ride up the lift at Bretton Woods a few years ago. While the mountains of New Hampshire may inspire downhill skiers, Stone also said that the forecast is good for cross country skiing.”(Cross country) skiing is in ideal activity for colder days,” he said. “Often you find yourself in the shelter of the woods on the trails and obviously you exert physical energy to keep you warm. Much of it comes down to wearing the appropriate clothing and layers and taking a break if you get cold.”We are thinking about a return to Bretton Woods this weekend, so here’s hoping the weather stays cold and the snow holds up!The New England Patriots broke our hearts when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. However, even though we have no “dog in the hunt” for the Super Bowl, New Hampshire ski resorts are offering deals on Super Bowl Sunday, according to a SkiNH press release. For cross country skiers, think about “going to Jackson,” as Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash once sang. “Super Bowl Widows’ Weekend” will take place at Jackson Ski Touring on Feb. 3. Groups of three guests or more can purchase two day trail passes for $21.Cannon Mountain, Cranmore Mountain, the aforementioned Bretton Woods and Gunstock Mountain Resort all have promotions that day.At Bretton Woods, there is a limited amount of $30 lift tickets that must be purchased in advance at shop.brettonwoods.com.Gunstock is combining its hospitality with charity, as its “Souper Bowl Sunday” invites guests to bring a can of soup as a donation to a local food pantry, and get a 2 for 1 Prime Time Lift Ticket in exchange. If you wear a piece of clothing with an NFL team logo, you’ll get $10 off a Prime Time Lift Ticket. There are also 2 for 1 Afternoon Lift Tickets and Afternoon Zip Tours (1 and 2 p.m. for the latter). To learn more about ski conditions and deals in the Granite State, visit SkiNH.com or XCSkiNH.com.Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
