LYNN – The City Council Ordinance Committee is scheduled to take up the senior abatement program during its Tuesday meeting but only for discussion.”I’m happy they’re taking it up,” said Mayoral Chief of Staff Jamie Cerulli. “I have seniors ready and eager to go.”Cerulli headed up a committee that also included Assessor Peter Caron and Councilor at large Daniel Cahill among others. Under the proposal eligible seniors will work for the city for minimum wage, which is $8 an hour but, instead of a paycheck, they will get a break on their property tax bills up to $600. Several surrounding communities such as Swampscott and Revere already have a program in place.Cerulli said she has 30 applications that Council on Aging Director Stacey Minchello, who also sat on the committee, is not verifying.”We want to make sure everyone qualifies then Stacey will give them back to me and those that qualify will be CORIed,” Cerulli said referring to the standard background check. The committee had the proposal ready to go in December but has been waiting for the process to play out, which includes approval by the City Council before it can be enacted.Cerulli said Ward 3 Councilor Darren Cyr, who heads up the Ordinance Committee, had a few questions and requested a meeting with Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy. With that out of the way, the council will take up the ordinance for discussion and, if there are no further questions, the committee will put it down for a public hearing, Cerulli said. Once the public hearing has been held and providing council approves it the program can be put into action.”I’m hoping that they will approve the ordinance quickly,” said Kennedy, who has been a proponent of the proposal from the start. “Lynn has many eager seniors who would love to contribute their talent and expertise to the city in exchange for a reduction in their tax bills.”The Ordinance Committee will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in room 402.Chris Stevens can be reached at [email protected].
