LYNN – Parking is about to get a little easier for drivers in the downtown area. The Off Street Parking Commission voted 3-0 Tuesday to shift the entrance of the Andrew Street parking lot to the Liberty Street side of the property.”Most of the businesses are on that side,” said Commissioner Jamie Cerulli. “And it’s important for the auditorium.”Cerulli said making the change won’t cost the board a cent because Community Development offered to move the small shack that houses the lot’s cashier from one side to the other.Commissioner Corey Jackson called the change a much better option than the way it works now.Andrew Street is a one-way running from Central Avenue toward Market Street. In order to get to the lot a driver has to know how to navigate through the downtown area, Jackson said. By switching the entrance a driver can turn off Market Street onto Liberty Street or take Sutton Street off Central to reach the lot.”It’s much more efficient,” Jackson said.Community Development Director James Marsh said the switch simply makes sense. People headed to the auditorium or to D’Amici’s Bakery or Rossetti’s restaurant, two businesses that are scheduled to open on Sutton Street later this year, will have easy parking and easy access.Marsh hopes to put a sign on Market Street to point the way toward public parking for auditorium visitors and other downtown patrons, Cerulli said.Cerulli said she would seek estimates for moving the service shed, which Parking Director Jay Fenton said included electric as well as plumbing.”What would it cost to automate rather than move the shed?” asked Jackson. “This would be a good time to investigate that.”Cerulli agreed but said they could make that decision at a later date.Fenton said he was concerned that with new businesses opening up downtown the lot wouldn’t be large enough to accommodate an influx of cars.”I still don’t know what kind of numbers they’re talking about once they open D’Amici’s and Rossetti’s,” he said. “What do you think they’ll need? If it’s 10 that’s one thing, if it’s 40 that’s something different.”Chairman Taso Nikolakopoulos said he believed the two businesses were looking for 30-40 spaces combined but that too could be worked out in the future, along with the rest of the details.Chris Stevens can be reached at [email protected].
