SAUGUS – A pressure cooker was found at the Square One Mall, but the bomb squad determined it was empty and safe, Saugus Police Assistant Chief Ronald Giorgetti said Monday afternoon.A mall patron called police at 11:14 a.m. Monday and reported a suspicious article located in a parking lot underneath the parking deck by Best Buy at the Square One Mall, Giorgetti said.Saugus Police and Fire responded to the scene, then requested the assistance of the State Police Bomb Squad. The squad was able to determine that the suspicious article was a pressure cooker but it was empty and posed no danger, Giorgetti reported.”There was nothing that would indicate it was anything other than what it was: a pressure cooker and the contents were empty,” Giorgetti said.Meanwhile, police established an approximately 1,000-yard perimeter, closed down nearby portions of the mall and closed exits on Route 1 that lead to the mall.Giorgetti said police will review video surveillance to determine who put the pressure cooker in the parking lot and whether it was placed intentionally or not.Please read the full story in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily Item.
