SWAMPSCOTT – In a unanimous vote, the Board of Selectmen approved the redesign of the intersection of Burrill Street, Humphrey Street, and Monument Avenue in a meeting Wednesday.Dave Castellarin, assistant Town Administrator and member of the Traffic Study Committee, appeared before the board to present the plan that would eliminate the intersection?s merge from Burrill Street onto Humphrey Street and add cobblestone to the area between to alert drivers that driving is prohibited unless emergency vehicles in that area. The intention of the redesign is to make the intersection less hazardous, as Swampscott Police Lieutenant Gary Lord speculated it was the worst in town, with the most accidents.Castellarin and board members discussed whether it was the merge, traffic lights or pedestrian traffic the was the cause of the traffic in the area. “It?s just a lousy intersection,” said Chairman Jill Sullivan.With the redesign approved, Castellain said the bid will be out for work as soon as the end of June, with a hopeful completion by August.The project will cost about $10,000, with the choice of aesthetically-pleasing cobblestone or rumble strips up for discussion based on cost.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
