The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in 13 innings at Camden Yards on Thursday.
Chris Davis hit a two-out RBI single to score Nick Markakis with the winning run.
Tying the game in the top of the seventh inning, the Boston Red Sox sent matters into extra innings against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Thursday.
Boston entered the seventh down 4-2 against Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz. Yet successive singles by Daniel Nava, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Will Middlebrooks loaded the bases with none out. Stephen Drew then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3, and Jacoby Ellsbury batted into a fielder’s choice to tie the score. After Tommy Hunter relieved Matusz, Ellsbury was caught stealing to end the inning.
The score remained 4-4 after nine innings ”¦ and it stayed that way going into the top of the 13th inning.
The Orioles struck first in the third inning against Boston starter Felix Doubront. Danny Valencia hit a solo homer for a 1-0 lead. Ryan Flaherty doubled, Nate McLouth sacrificed him to third and Manny Machado hit an RBI single to put the O’s up 2-0. Nick Markakis singled and Adam Jones hit into a fielder’s choice, moving Machado to third. Chris Davis hit an RBI single for a 3-0 lead before Doubront struck out Matt Wieters to end the inning.
Boston got within one in the top of the fourth on two-out back-to-back homers from David Ortiz (his 14th) and Mike Carp (his seventh) against Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman.
The Orioles scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Markakis reached first on an error by Middlebrooks. Doubront hit Jones with a pitch. Davis struck out, but Wieters hit an RBI single for a 4-2 lead. After J.J. Hardy walked, Red Sox manager John Farrell relieved Doubront and brought in Franklin Morales, who induced Valencia to pop out.
