LYNN – A 25-year-old Saugus man was sentenced to nine months in jail after admitting to choking and threatening to kill his girlfriend in a drunken rage.”(The victim) said Tataro had been drinking and was under the influence of alcohol when he punched her in the head and choked her along with slamming her head into the headboard,” Saugus Police Officer James M. Scott wrote in a report.Thomas A. Tataro, 25, of 1 Eustis St. #3, admitted to sufficient facts for a finding of guilty on charges of domestic assault and battery; witness intimidation; and violation of an abuse-prevention order; last Friday.The victim told police on Jan. 29 that she had recently been beaten by Tataro and that he was texting her saying he was going to harm himself.She said Tataro used cocaine and had physically abused her previously. She showed police a large bruise on her arm and a dislocated finger from the most recent incident on Jan. 24. The victim told police Tataro threatened to kill her if she reported the abuse.Police arrested Tataro and he appeared in Lynn District Court Jan. 30 where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. Judge David Dunbar Livingston ordered Tataro held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, Feb. 7, according to court documents. A woman called the victim on Feb. 3 with a message from Tataro saying he loved her and everything would be OK after he got out of jail, which violated a recent restraining order.Instead of a dangerousness hearing, Tataro pleaded to the charges.Judge Ellen Flatley sentenced Tataro to two years in the house of corrections, with nine months to be served, the remainder suspended after two years, according to court documents. During the two years, Tataro must remain drug-and-alcohol free with random screens, wear a GPS and undergo a mental health evaluation and follow recommended treatment.
