LYNN – A judge ordered a mental-health evaluation for a Peabody man who allegedly attacked a sporting-goods store employee with one of the baseball bats the suspect said he stole to arm his friends against a Muslim terrorist cell at an East Boston taxi company.”As Officer Murphy and I brought (the defendant) to his feet, he stated, ?Obama is the Antichrist and all Democrats suck,'” Saugus Police Officer Jeffrey Wood wrote in a report. (The defendant) said ?I had to steal the bats to arm my buddies at the Tunnel Taxi Company in East Boston. There are non English-speaking Muslims working there and I know they are part of a terrorist cell.”The defendant said he objected to the mental-health evaluation.Joseph Deangelis, 43, of 259 Newbury St. #22, Peabody, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; larceny +$250; assault; resisting arrest; and violation of a city knife ordinance; at 2:56 p.m. Sunday.He was arraigned on the charges Monday in Lynn District Court where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.Saugus Police responded to Dick’s Sporting Goods at the Square One Mall at approximately 2:35 p.m. Sunday on the report of a man who had hit somebody with a baseball bat. Police arrived at the scene to find security officers (as well as Saugus Town Manager Scott Crabtree) trying to subdue the suspect, later identified as Deangelis, according to police.Deangelis allegedly resisted arrest, yelling about Democrats, using racial slurs and explaining to the officer how he wanted to arm his friends and insisting that “Obama is the Antichrist and all Democrats are in on it.”He was transported to the station.Witnesses told police a belligerent customer later identified as Deangelis came into the store and began to scream about Obama and Democrats, according to police. As employees tried to escort Deangelis from the store, he reportedly grabbed two hockey sticks and several metal baseball bats. When confronted in the parking lot, Deangelis allegedly charged at an employee and swung a bat at his head. The alleged victim reported he was able to block the bat. Police said the incident was captured on security cameras and a picture of the alleged assault is included in the court file. The goods allegedly stolen valued $918, according to police.Court psychologist Dr. Susan Rudman testified Deangelis had paranoid thoughts, had a history of thought disorders and was not taking his medication. She recommended Deangelis be sent for evaluation.Court-appointed defense attorney Mary Teczar said her client objected to a mental-health evaluation.A prosecutor requested that the Commonwealth be allowed to argue bail when Deangelis returns to court.Judge Joseph Jennings ordered Deangelis sent for a mental-health evaluation and for a review of the status of the case on March 24.
