LYNN – A judge ordered a city man held without bail Thursday after the man allegedly raped a woman while she was asleep and then threatened her boyfriend with a knife when confronted. But the defendant said the woman had a bad dream and that her boyfriend then robbed him at knifepoint.Henry E. Roper, 44, of 534 Essex St. #113, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon; and rape; at 2:01 a.m. Thursday. He pleaded not guilty to the charges later that day in Lynn District Court.Attorneys did not discuss details of the case in open court Thursday. Essex Assistant District Attorney Katelyn Giliberti requested Roper be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, and a court-appointed defense attorney requested a continuance so the public defender’s office could prepare. But Lynn Police reported responding to Roper’s apartment at 1:28 a.m. Thursday where the defendant said he let two people he met at the shelter stay overnight – a man slept in a chair, a woman slept on the floor and Roper slept in his bed.Roper told officers he awoke to the woman saying someone was touching her, but he told the woman she was having a bad dream, police reported. The male guest then allegedly got up, punched Roper in the face and got a knife from the top of the fridge and robbed him.Police noted Roper had a cut on the inside of his lip but declined any medical help. But police said that in retelling the story, Roper said he first went to the bathroom when awoken and then returned to the apartment to be punched in the face, choked at knifepoint and robbed by the male guest.Meanwhile, the male guest and the alleged victim met up with officers while heading to the police station. They told police they were asleep when the woman felt Roper touching her vagina. She allegedly woke the male guest, and Roper pulled a knife when confronted. A struggle ensued during which the male guest got the knife, and he delivered it to police, officers reported. The alleged victim told police the same story, except she said she awoke to Roper with one hand underneath her shorts, raping her.”As well, both parties now informed this officer that Roper had followed them from the apartment and asked them not to go to the police station and continued to say (the alleged victim) was having a bad dream,” police reported.Judge James LaMothe ordered Roper held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. Probation Officer Don Castle also requested Roper be held on an alleged probation violation due to the new charges and failing to comply with alcohol testing.Roper is scheduled to return to court July 31.
