LYNN – A judge ordered a city man held without bail pending trial after a woman testified to nearly a decade of domestic abuse of her and her family, and police said the man also recently abused the family’s two dogs.”The victim testified to him having bruised her face in the past, he physically abused her while she was pregnant, and he strangled a son to the point where he turned blue,” Essex Assistant District Attorney Katelyn Giliberti said in Lynn District Court Monday.Juan Imul-Mejia, 32, of 19 Mall St., was arrested and charged with two counts of domestic assault and battery; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and two counts of cruelty to animals; at 6:02 p.m. Friday. He was arraigned on the charges Monday in Lynn District Court where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.Police responded to the Mall Street address Friday evening and found the defendant with “extremely bloodshot” eyes and in a car outside, according to a report by Lynn Police Officer Kelly Aylward.Imul-Mejia told police he and his wife had been arguing, but there was no physical assault. He said he wanted to take his son to the movies, but his wife had accused him of being on drugs and drunk. The son told the officer his parents had been fighting and his mother was hurt, according to police.A teenage stepdaughter told police Imul-Mejia came home from work drunk and angry. The teenager said the defendant shut off her brothers’ Xbox game and said he was taking them to the movies. The defendant’s 9-year-old son allegedly said he wanted to go but not while his father was drunk. “Imul-Mejia then walked over and kicked (the teenage alleged victim’s) chihuahua ?Mini,’ Aylward reported the teenager said. “He then grabbed (his son) and tried to drag him to the car.”Imul-Mejia shoved his wife and slammed his stepdaughter into a coffee table when each tried to intervene, police reported. Imul-Mejia allegedly then followed his stepdaughter upstairs, grabbed her by the hair and beat her on the head and in the face. Police reported the alleged victim had visible injuries and both boys “appeared to be terrified of their father.”The alleged victim reported the chihuahua had no obvious injuries “but has been somewhat aggressive since being kicked,” Aylward said. “(The alleged victim) also stated that it was her other dog that had severe injuries.”Police said the stepdaughter told officers that Imul-Mejia was drunk and angry and drove his work truck at the family’s rottweiler a few weeks ago.Police said that Imul-Mejia allegedly refused to take the dog to the veterinarian, but the animal had “an obvious injury” to his left hip and rear leg.”His left rear leg was visibly shaking, and he was unable to walk on it,” police said.Giliberti requested Imul-Mejia be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. During the hearing, Imul-Mejia’s wife told the judge that she and her family had endured nine years of domestic abuse. Giliberti requested Imul-Mejia be found dangerous and asked that he remain held without bail pending trial to ensure the safety of the alleged victims and the public.Defense attorney Mark Nestor asked that conditions of release including bail be argued should Imul-Mejia be found a danger.Judge Cathleen Campbell replied she was holding Imul-Mejia without bail pending a trial and cited alleged abuse, including hitting, punching, choking and whipping the alleged victims with a cord. Campbell also noted an incident where Imul-Mejia was alleged to have bruised his wife’s entire face during an assault while she was pregnant.Imul-Mejia is scheduled to return to court Sept. 3.
