SALEM – Voting from the audience will determine the winner from a 10-finalist field at the Witch City Comedy Contest championship, Saturday at the Griffen Theatre, 7 Lynde St., at 8 p.m.The finalists were selected from 31 contestants during preliminary rounds held last weekend (Sept. 12-13).Presented by Scamps Comedy Productions and the Griffen Theatre, the contest features amateur and some professional comedians at the “opener level,” who will compete for a $200 prize in the contest and a spot on a “paid show” on a weekend. As with the preliminary rounds, winners in the final will be determined by voting from members of the audience, who will vote for their top three. There will be several North Shore comedians in the finals, including Joe Flynn of Salem, Ian von Steffan from Salem, Karman Raye of Beverly, Tim Willis of Lynn, Gordon Ulen of Topsfield, former Salem resident Brett Johnson (now of Somerville), Mark Gallagher of Amesbury, Mike Fahey from Hudson and two New Hampshire comedians, Paul Landwehr of Manchester and Samuel Bennett of Rye.Some of the comedians have been performing at professional clubs in Boston, others have had just a handful of performances. The show will be hosted by Erik Rodenhiser, actor/comedian and owner of the Griffen Theatre, and feature a closing set by Chris Dimitrakopoulos of Peabody, the 2010 Witch City Contest winner who works on the Boston comedy circuit and is planning to move to Los Angeles in October.”We had good houses last week, and the shows were excellent,” Rodenhiser said. “The audience has a lot of fun. Although there’s a prize and it is a competition, all of the comedians are friends, and we stress that having a good experience for everyone is the most important goal of the evening.”This is the second time the contest has been run. Along with Dimitrakopoulos, several comedians have gone on to work as professional comedians. Second-place finisher Matt D. of Somerville has appeared on Comedy Central and is currently preparing a set for a popular late night talk show, and contestants such as Joe Espinola of Peabody, Jody Sloane of Lawrence and Mac Livingston of Methuen are paid to perform around New England.Comedians will perform seven-minute sets in the finals. Contestants will be penalized for going beyond seven minutes, and material will be suitable for adults. For more information, go to GriffenTheatre.com or ScampsComedy.com.
