LYNN – A city man who allegedly whipped and strangled a woman to the point that her injuries were still visible two days later was ordered held without bail Thursday.”This officer observed some very light redness on the front (of her neck) at the time of the interview,” Lynn Police Officer James Daley wrote in a report. “She also showed me some horizontal welts across her upper front and back thighs, which were bluish red and appeared to have been caused recently.”Virgilio Lopez-Deleon, 24, of 70 Rockaway St. #1, was arrested on a warrant charging him with assault and battery on a family/household member; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; strangulation or suffocation; and witness intimidation. He pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday in Lynn District Court.Police reported that the alleged victim came to the station Monday and said Lopez-Deleon assaulted her Saturday night after they argued about him staying out often and drinking heavily. When she said she wanted to leave, Lopez-Deleon grabbed her by the hair, dragged her to the closet, got a belt and began whipping her, police said the alleged victim reported.Lopez-Deleon then allegedly strangled the alleged victim to the point where she could not breathe and felt she was going to die.The defendant also allegedly smashed the woman’s phone when she tried to call police. The woman said she went to the hospital the next day and her family had convinced her by Monday to report the incident to police.Essex Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia requested that Lopez-Deleon be held without bail pending a dangerous hearing. She said the commonwealth had not yet spoken with the alleged victim due to an incorrect phone number.A defense attorney did not challenge probable cause for the request and requested investigative funds to prepare for the hearing scheduled for Oct. 16.
