MARBLEHEAD – There were no ifs, ands or buts about it on Friday night at Piper Field. Reigning Division 3 Super Bowl champion Tewksbury took the No. 2 seed Magicians behind the woodshed en route to a 41-6 victory in the Division 3 Northeast semifinals. The Redmen, whose only losses this season have come to Everett and Haverhill, saw backs James Sullivan and James Hirtle both rush for over 100 yards as they dominated time of possession to give the Magicians (8-1) their first loss of the season.?That is the best football team in Division 3,” Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff said of Tewksbury. “They came out and beat us physically on both sides of the ball and it was a real (butt) kicking. They are better than they were last year.”Rudloff knows first-hand how talented the Redmen are as his team lost in the sectional final last season to Tewksbury in a game that was close until the end. On Friday night, however, the Redmen made it look easy on both sides of the ball, holding prolific running back Brooks Tyrrell to 82 yards on 22 carries with most of the yardage coming long after the outcome was decided.Their ground-and-pound style was perfect for a night that had winds blowing as hard as 30 mph which made putting the ball in the air for passes and kicks a risky venture.?We kind of challenged (our backs and line),” Tewksbury coach Brian Aylward said. “You like to have your best players playing their ‘A’ game at this time of year and they certainly brought it (Friday).”Marblehead took the wind for the first quarter but the Redmen did their best Dean Smith impersonation by taking the air out of the ball against the wind as they held possession for all but three plays. The Redmen failed to score on the game’s first drive but after a punt they marched 67 yards in 13 plays, all on the ground, as Hirtle swept around right end on the first play of the second quarter to give Tewksbury a 7-0 lead.Marblehead drove near midfield on its second possession but Spencer Craig was stopped on fourth-and-one at the Magicians 47. It took only five runs for the Redmen to score as Tom Casey raced in from 22 yards out for a 14-0 lead with 7:09 left in the half.Moments later, it went from bad to worse for Marblehead as Craig was picked off by Ryan Bednarek at the Magicians 22. Hirtle wasted little time as he went to the house untouched on the next play for a stunning 21-0 lead.Desperately in need of something positive, the Magicians got it with an 84-yard drive that took just over a minute and culminated in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Craig to Will Millett touchdown, cutting the Marblehead deficit to 21-6.But Tewskbury delivered a crushing blow just before the half as they went 50 yards in eight plays with Sullivan scoring from a yard out for a 27-6 lead at the break.?They didn’t do anything to fool us,” Rudloff said. “They kept it basic and just took it to us.”The Marblehead defense slowed Tewksbury in the third quarter but their offense remained ice cold. Tewksbury put the game out of reach late in the third as Hirtle scored from three yards with :03 left to make it 34-6., and added a final score with 6:00, sending the Redmen to the sectional final.?We haven’t been beaten up physically like that all season,” Rudloff said.
