WOBURN – The Lynnfield volleyball team furthered its dominance over Notre Dame Academy (Tyngsborough) and the Division 3 North Sectional, which it claimed for a fifth straight season following a 3-0 victory on Saturday at Woburn High School.Three of those five titles have came at the expense of the Lancers, who dropped the first two sets by identical finals of 25-18 before the Pioneers clinched the crown with a 25-15 finale.?The girls set this as a goal at the very beginning of the season, carrying on the tradition of winning the North,” said Coach Michelle Perrone.?I?m not sure that any other Lynnfield team has had such a streak so I?m extremely proud of our accomplishments this season.”Offensively, the match revolved around a showdown between a pair of All-State honorees in Lynnfield senior captain, Emma Mancini (20 kills) and Notre Dame senior co-captain, Cathryn MacGregor (13).?What?s there not to say about Emma?” said Perrone when asked about Mancini?s performance which included 11 digs, two aces and a block.?She?s one of the best players to come through the program and isn?t ready for her senior season to come to an end. She has bigger things in mind.”Perrone sung her praises for MacGregor as well.?She?s an All-State player for a reason,” said Perrone. “She hits the ball really well and is the core of her team. She was great tonight.”Set No.1 saw the No.3 Pioneers jump out to an early 13-5 lead behind four finishes and an ace from Mancini. Following a timeout, the No.1 Lancers reeled off five consecutive points, including a pair of kills from MacGregor, to cut its deficit to three (11-14).Lynnfield responded with a streak of its own, helped along by junior Shannon Ryan who notched her second ace of the session (3 total) before a push-shot from sophomore Sarah Mezini (3 aces) opened up a 19-13 lead.Mancini tacked on her seventh, eighth and ninth kills down the stretch, the latter of which clinched the set.In the middle frame, Notre Dame tightened up its play which in turn, tightened up the scoreboard.Neither side led by more than three until the Pioneers, ahead 12-10, ripped off eight straight points with alternating finishes between junior MaryKate Deighan (3 kills) and Mancini (6 in set).A late push from the Lancers brought about a smart timeout from Perrone who calmed her squad before they finished things two points later. The finale was more of the same for Lynnfield, which used one big surge to take a commanding 11-3 lead, strung together with kills from Mancini and sophomore Jessica Badger (2 total) as well as three aces from Deighan. The younger kids have really stepped up this year,” said Perrone of a group including sophomore Katie Nugent who tallied two aces.?Our juniors and sophomores have been so impressive. I?ve never had a group that has put forth so much effort.”MacGregor turned in the defensive play of the game when she played a ball while lying flat on her back, leading to a Pioneers? unforced error.Notre Dame coach, Rob Mahoney, praised both team?s captains as well.?We all knew coming in that they were going to be the focal points, and for good reason, they?re both tremendous volleyball players and leaders.” “Cathryn is easily one of the top five players in program history,” he said.Mancini?s final kill of the match opened up a 20-15 lead before Deighan and Mezini combined for three late aces to help set up the celebration.Up next for Lynnfield is the State Semifinals where they will meet a familiar opponent in Frontier High (Thursday at Hudson High, 7).
