Both the Peabody and Saugus Athletic Halls of Fame welcomed new induction classes on Friday night.The Tanners inducted 23 new members who were introduced before the start of Thursday’s win over the Sachems and then were enshrined the following evening at the Danversport Yacht Club.Leading the list of honorees was a trio of current and former coaches along with a pair of baseball pitchers who went on to be drafted by Major League teams.The coaches who were honored were current baseball and football coach Mark Bettencourt along with long time field hockey and girls tennis coach Lorraine Benoit. Recently retired girls basketball coach Jane Heil also was enshrined along side her husband and assistant coach, Bob Heil.Headlining the players who were inducted were Jeff Allison and Ryan Moorer, who were a dominant 1-2 punch for coach Ed Nizwantowski’s Tanners on the diamond. Both were named Gatorade Players of the Year in their senior seasons of 2003 and 2004 with Allison also being a No. 1 draft pick of the Florida Marlins as a senior. Moorer was chosen by the Chicago Cubs the following season before going on to pitch at Maryland.A trio of siblings also were among the inductees. Leanne (Gallaher) Reid, her sister Alissa and brother Michael helped bring the Peabody swim program to the top of the GBL during their years as Tanners.Also being inducted were Jon Cahill (1996); Peter Soteropoulos (1999); Raymond ‘Ted’ Staunton (1987); Maggie Driscoll (2002); Steve Cella (1998); Jonathan Blodgett, Jr. (1998); Greg Welch (2003); Cathy (Carnes) McDevitt (1979); Dianne Fischer-Minehane (1980); Lt. Col. Robert Carpenter (1977); John Lane (1979) and posthumously were James MacDonald (1994); Paul ‘Butch’ Galaris (1958) and Kenneth Farrar (1997).uThe Saugus inductees all helped lead their teams to success in multiple sports and several Northeastern Conference championships.The honorees were Robin (DeMarco) Belyea (1983); Alexis Lawrence (2000); Kim Sturgis (2003); Kyle Sucharewicz (2002); Ryan McKeever (1996); Eric Pedersen (1999) and Robert Lessard (1982).Pedersen also earned a Division 1 scholarship to Merrimack College.
