Classical came out on fire and scored a solid win on the road Saturday at Malden, 49-28. The Rams only had one bad quarter, the second, where they were outscored 10-3. But they notched double-digit point totals in the other three quarters, including 16 in the first quarter and 19 in the fourth.
Classical coach Tom Sawyer was impressed with his team?s effort.
?We started out really strong and it was great, but they wouldn?t let us get away,” Sawyer said. “They kept it close really until the fourth quarter. That?s when we were able to hit some big shots.”
Paris Wilkey led the the Rams with 11 points. Chelsea Rogers hit two three-pointers, with eight points total. Heidi Milhem and Chenysse Hill each added seven points.
GIRLS
Danvers 38, Peabody 31
The Falcons (5-9) pulled off a mild upset thanks to the sharpshooting of sophomore Angela Saggese, who led all scorers with 14 points. Peabody (9-5) got nine points from Marina Demild and eight from Katie Wallace.
BOYS
St. Mary?s 64, Arlington Catholic 63 (OT)
The Spartans (10-4) survived a thriller in Arlington Saturday, with a last-second, game-winning shot from senior guard Dennis Bailer, who had a game-high 31 points. Sophomore Jonny Mercado added 14 points while junior Tyler Devine had five points and seven rebounds. Devine also blocked the potential game-winning shot to seal the victory for the Spartans.
Marblehead 63, Salem 44
The Magicians got back to .500 on Sunday afternoon with a solid win over Salem (10-5) on the road. Teddy Bostley led the way for Marblehead with 18 points and seven rebounds, with 15 of those points coming in the second half. Cian Saunders wasn?t far behind with 17 points for the Magicians.
?This was a huge win for us today,” Marblehead coach Mike Giardi said. “We?ve got a tough stretch coming up and we need to get some wins.”
St. John?s Prep 72, New Mission 59St. John?s only held a two-point lead at the half, but pulled away in the fourth quarter thanks to some timely shooting. At 11-3, the Eagles have already clinched a spot in the tournament. Ben Judson and Alec Buresh each had 16 points for St. John?s. Buresh hit a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles pull away. Spencer Danforth had 14 points while Tyson Johnson had 10.
