SAUGUS – A former aide to fired town manager Scott Crabtree waded Monday into the political firestorm in the town by filing a court complaint detailing what Louis Markakis called Board of Selectmen efforts to “overtax and overburden” Crabtree.?Yielding to unrealistic requests from the Board of Selectmen to the Town Manager?s office took away from the time needed to service Saugus residents and the general public,” stated the complaint.Markakis? attorney, Kevin Powers of Boston, filed the complaint in Salem Superior Court Monday. It names the board and members Stephen L. Castinetti, Ellen L. Faiella, Paul H. Allan and Maureen P. Dever, but not board member Debra Panetta (who did not vote with the others in firing Crabtree).?We believe we have a strong case and that we can succeed,” Powers said.Crabtree?s dismissal last Oct. 29 triggered a campaign to recall the selectmen – except Panetta – from office with an election set for March 17.The firing and subsequent recall campaign also ignited three court complaint filings, including Markakis?, with Crabtree filing a complaint against Castinetti, Faiella and Allan on Jan. 13.Markakis is seeking reinstatement to his town job as well as back pay, emotional damages compensation and other relief through the court filing. No court date for hearing the complaint has been scheduled.Markakis lives in Lynn and worked in the town manager?s office from October 2013 until last Dec. 5. He earned $46,350 a year.Part of Markakis? complaint repeats allegations against Castinetti, Faiella and Allan outlined in Crabtree?s court complaint.According to the complaint, Crabtree in 2013 sent town officials a letter “…detailing allegations that had been made to Crabtree that Castinetti had engaged in ethical violations and misconduct.”Crabtree accused Castinetti, according to the complaint, of pressuring Saugus businesses to buy advertising “in exchange for favorable treatment” by selectmen.Markakis? and Crabtree?s complaint both claim Crabtree angered Allan early last year by not hiring a friend of Allan?s son as a town firefighter. It also states Crabtree was forced to lay off Faiella from her job in 2012 as a part-time police department records clerk.Efforts to reach Faiella and Allan Monday were unsuccessful, but Castinetti criticized Markakis for “trying to regurgitate” Crabtree?s accusations.?I?ve been cleared by the (state) Ethics Commission more than once,” he said.Castinetti said he has known Markakis for years and “always knew him as a good guy.”?I have no complaints with Lou Markakis,” Castinetti said.Dever called Markakis? complaint yet another attempt to “avenge the firing of Scott Crabtree.” The complaint repeats Crabtree?s claim in his complaint that Dever called him a liar during a meeting. She denies that accusation and called Markakis? complaint part of “a full-fledged continual assault” on the selectmen.Markakis claims in his complaint that he was asked to step into acting Town Manager Robert Palleschi?s office on Dec. 1 where he was told his job had been eliminated and he could “…start his Christmas shopping early.”Markakis, according to the complaint, complied with an order to clean out his desk. In the complaint, Markakis states his loyalty to Crabtree earned him “demeaning and disrespectful” conduct from selectmen. Castinetti said Markakis “should have never been in that town hall.”?He was doing work that Crabtree should have done,” Castinetti said.
