SAUGUS – The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety abruptly closed Kasabuski Arena indefinitely Saturday due to a public safety emergency condition. The unexpected closure resulted in the indefinite cancellation of all hockey games and practices as well as other activity at the ice rink. The safety emergency was a result of unsafe snow loads on the roof and the blocking of emergency public exits by a large amount of snow.Rink manager Dan Maniff said the rink was closed for precautionary reasons, not structural issues, and he is waiting for the OK to reopen.?Everyone has snow on the roofs, but we need to get a structural engineer to come down and say it?s fit to operate,” Maniff said. “I made some phone calls reaching out to them (Monday).”Maniff said there?s nothing that can be done in the meantime, but when open, hundreds of people use the rink daily, including school teams and figure skaters.?There?s no direction of how to proceed,” Maniff said. “The snow from the roof was removed, and we?re just waiting on when we can reopen.”Parent Scott Brazis said the rink closed too late.?After a roof collapsed on a Canton rink, the town was notified and they shut down,” Brazis said. “But the overload on the roof should have been addressed earlier. My family and I were there Friday night. The fire exits also weren?t shoveled out.”Brazis, who said he goes to the rink with his two children four times a week, said snow blocking the emergency exit doors is inexcusable and potentially life-threatening to children and families, which is never acceptable.?One door had 4 to 5 feet of snow, and the other had 10 feet dripping over,” Brazis said. “The rink should have made sure the emergency exits are cleared, because if anything happened, you can?t get out quickly.”Brazis said Action Emergency Services was removing snow from the roof when he was there Saturday at 2 p.m.?I was at the rink on Saturday and observed a private company and Saugus hockey players on the roof assisting in removing snow from the building,” Brazis said. “I have spoken with many angered parents from Saugus and Lynnfield in the past couple of days wanting answers as to why our children were allowed to enter the building as late as Friday when the building conditions were clearly unsafe and dangerous enough to be ultimately closed by DCR Saturday.”But this closing isn?t unique to Saugus.According to William Hickey, acting press secretary at the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees municipal rinks in the state, in addition to Metropolis in Canton, where the roof collapsed, other closings were Veterans Memorial Rink in Waltham and Murphy Skating Rink in South Boston.?We have a contractual relationship and advised them to remove the snow from the roof,” Hickey said. “The Department of Public Safety likely closed it due to the Canton incident.”The rink is located at 201 Forest St., near Breakheart Reservation.
