Dr. Michael Pistiner, a pediatric allergist for Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and instructor of pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, conducted a professional development program for Lynn Public Schools principals, nurses and food service staff on Tuesday at Breed Middle School.Pistiner advocated a collaborative approach, recommending that each school have a team of three staff – principal, nurse and food service personnel – to deal with allergies of students and staff. He also provided educational and training materials suitable for use with parents.Also present for the professional development were Superintendent of Schools Dr. Catherine C. Latham; Holly Alperin, health education coordinator for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; Christina Hanson, a consultant for allergy policy with the DESE; and Mary Ann Gapinski, director of school health services for the Department of Public Health.Pisitner is the father of a child with food allergies and has a special interest in food allergy management and education in school and restaurant settings. He is co-founder and content creator of AllergyHome and serves as a voluntary consultant for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, School Health Services. He also volunteers on a team assembled to implement a law designed to increase food allergy awareness in Massachusetts restaurants.
