Revere could soon see some competition in the cable television market.
The city will host a public hearing to “consider the qualifications of RCN Telecom Services of Massachusetts, LLC to construct and operate a cable television system in Revere,” according to a meeting notice.
Currently, Comcast is the only cable service provider operating in Revere, though several satellite dish providers offer coverage to the city. Verizon does not offer it’s FIOS fiber optic television service in Revere.
Bringing a new cable provider to the city was a top campaign promise of Mayor Brian Arrigo.
“The mayor made it clear he’s interested in getting some competition in the cable market in the city,” said Arrigo aide and spokesman Joe Gravellese.
In a statement provided to the Item, RCN said entering the Revere market would provide more options for TV-watching consumers.
“RCN is always looking to expand to communities that are located near its current footprint, and for opportunities to bring competition to residents and businesses in cities and towns by providing them with telecommunications services to fit their needs.” the statement read. “Revere has been one of those communities that we believe would benefit from having another provider such as RCN.”
Anyone interested can attend the hearing, which will be held in the City Council Chamber in Revere City Hall on Aug. 21 at 5 p.m.
