The Peabody girls basketball team earned its second win in a row with a 44-22 victory at Marblehead on Friday night. With the win, the Tanners improved to 5-7 this season.
Catherine Manning logged a double-double at 11 points and 11 rebounds, Colleen Crotty scored eight points with key baskets in the third quarter and Georgia Leone scored six points. Jonalyn Carpenter grabbed eight rebounds and dished five assists and Brooke Hodas led the defense off the bench with six rebounds and three assists.
The Tanners need five victories to qualify for the state tournament with eight games remaining on their schedule.
Peabody battles Winthrop Tuesday (7).
“We have eight games left and we need five to get in so it’s doable,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “We have a tough schedule at the end of the season but we need to win these games.”
For Marblehead, Leila Walton scored six points and Emily Clough grabbed 12 rebounds. Brigette Gable and Madeline Bowden played well defensively.
St. Mary’s 66, Spellman 42
The Spartans (11-4) moved to within one game of tournament qualification. Olivia Matela led the way for St. Mary’s with 18 points, knocking in four 3-pointers. Gabby Torres scored 14 points and Pamela Gonzalez added 13 points. Gonzalez now needs 31 points to reach 1,000 for her career.
The Spartans also received solid performances off the the bench from Janisse Avellino (5 points, 6 rebounds) and Ellie Riordan (6 points, 5 rebounds).
St. Mary’s battles Bishop Feehan Saturday night at Emmanuel College.
Classical 53, Medford 25
Paris Wilkey led the Rams with 17 points and Irianis Delgado added 10 points. Skyler Crayton contributed off the bench with eight points. The Rams improved to 15-1 and visit Danvers Tuesday night (7).
Danvers 42, English 36
For English, Julianna Perry scored six points with five assists and three rebounds. Tommi Hill added seven points and five rebounds.
Northeast 41, Tech 23
Tech’s Jafernee Cruz scored 10 points and Shyla Jackson added five points. Nayelis Diaz led Tech’s defense.
“Nayelis grabbed some rebounds, grabbed some tips and made a couple of steals,” Tigers coach Kaitlyn Wechsler said.
Tech (4-12) hosts fellowship Monday (4).
Saugus 67, Somerville 52
Alessia Salzillo led the Sachems with 20 points, Marissa Stockwell scored 13 points. Alana Aldred took two charges and Kiley Ronan led the way on defense.
The Sachems (8-6) visit Malden Tuesday (7).
“It was a big win,” Saugus coach Mark Schruender said. “It was the most complete game we’ve played. The energy from start to end was terrific. Players were running up and down the court and I liked the effort.”
Bishop Fenwick 38, Austin Prep 33
Sammi Gallant tallied 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, Jennie Meagher added five points and 14 rebounds. Junior captain Jaxson Nadeau returned from ACL surgery tonight and scored seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Fenwick hosts Williams Tuesday.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Marblehead 7, Oakmont 0
Sydney Cresta paced the Magicians with four goals and two assists. Marblehead improved to 8-4-1 with the win.
