Bishop Fenwick senior pitcher David Furtado pitched a gem in his first time out this season, giving up only three hits, striking out seven and walking one in tossing a complete game on only 79 pitches as the Crusaders took down Arlington Catholic, 9-0, at home on Monday afternoon.
His batterymate, Keegan O’Connor, took care of the bulk of the offense, going 3-for-4 with two triples and a double, and knocking in five runs.
Other offensive stars were Ethan Belt (2-for-3, three runs scored), Tucker Destino (two hits, one RBI), Nick Pignone (two hits, two RBI) and Trey Delourey (2-for-4 with a run scored).
“I’m happy with today, especially considering all we’ve been through the the weather and field conditions,” said coach Russ Steeves.
Saugus 5, Everett 1
Todd Tringale was a force on the mound for Saugus in the Sachems’ season opener on Monday, tossing six innings and striking out nine while giving up only one unearned run. On the offensive side of things, Steve Pettenati went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and Grant Rust had a triple in the win.
Saugus (1-0) will host Marblehead at World Series Park on Wednesday.
St. John’s Prep 5, Malden Catholic 3
The Eagles had to grind one out on Monday afternoon, but they earned the win at home. Sean Letarte got the win on the mound after tossing five innings of one-run ball and giving up only two hits. On offense, Alex Lane had two RBIs to pace the scoring for the Eagles.
St. John’s Prep (1-1) will play on the road at BC High on Wednesday.
Beverly 15, Winthrop 0
The pitching duo of Kyle Cravatis and and Caelin Close combined for a shutout in the Panthers’ season opener on Monday afternoon. Nick Berry and Clayton McAlpine each had three hits to lead the Beverly offense, which generated 11 hits in the game.
Beverly (1-0) plays on the road at Swampscott on Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Lynn Classical 13, Somerville 1
The game was played at Frey Park in Lynn, as Classical’s normal home field at Breed was still drying out from Friday’s snow and rain.
The game ended after Somerville batted in the top of the fifth. Tori Adams pitched four innings, giving up one hit and striking out four. The run against her was unearned. Brooke Warren finished up, throwing an inning, striking out two and giving up no runs.
Offensively, Rebecca Walker was 2-for-2 with two walks, four RBI and two runs scored. Kayla Morrill was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Meghan Leavitt was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
“For our first time outside, I think we did a great job,” said Classical coach Erics Richards. “We did a good job getting people on bawe, and then getting them in.”
Saugus 5, Everett 3
Caitlin Wood went all the way for the Sachems, striking out 11, giving up seven hits, a walk, and three runs.
Junior Nystasia Rowe was 2-for-3 with an RBI, freshman second baseman Alexa Ferraro was 2-for-4, freshman Madison Niles was 1-for-3, and Ashley Shaw was 1-for-3 with a double.
Saugus (2-0) is at Marblehead Wednesday.
Peabody 7, Revere 6
It was a pair of newcomers to the Peabody softball team that helped lift the Tanners to victory on Monday, led by sophomore Makayla Rooney. The former junior varsity player went 2-for-4 and had the game-winning RBI double in the seventh inning for the Tanners, while fellow JV alum MacKenzie Marmion went 3-for-3 with two RBI. On the mound, veteran pitcher Tianna Dawe gave up just one earned run on three hits with 11 strikeouts in the win.
Peabody (1-0) is right back at it this afternoon with a road game against Danvers.
Beverly 15, Winthrop 3 (F/5)
Natalie Stillwell had a huge day for the Panthers, both on offense and defense. On the mound, she tossed all five innings and gave up just three runs on four hits with six strikeouts. She also hit a two-run home run in the game, as did teammate Rona Scott. The Panthers are now 1-0 on the year.
Arlington Catholic 7, Bishop Fenwick 5
Six errors in the field were the undoing for the Crusaders, who got strong performances all over the diamond on Monday. Natalie Medros had a solid start on the mound, pitching a complete game and giving up four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Tessa Palermo went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace the offense, while Courtney Norton also went 2-for-4 and added eight putouts in right field.
Fenwick (0-1) will host Austin Prep on Wednesday.
Marblehead 12, Swampscott 0 (F/5)
Behind a big day from Charlotte Plakans, the Magicians only needed five innings to earn a win on Monday afternoon. Plakans tossed a complete game on the mound and gave up just two hits with eight strikeouts, while also going 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. But she wasn’t even the biggest offensive powerhouse for Marblehead, as Mercedes Pelletier went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs. Belle Sogoloff went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Frances Pake went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Sophie Vener went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Magicians (1-0) will host Saugus on Wednesday.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 16, Gloucester 7
It was the Big Blue’s first game on the new turf surface. A plethora of Big Blue players had hat tricks: Elizabeth Green, Emerson Laundry, Ocean Crawley-Sweeney, Grace DeGrande and Mary Miles. Nikki Rosa scored one goal.
“I didn’t know what to expect with the team,” said coach Al Eaton. “We started off a little jumpy, but we settled down.”

St. Mary’s 15, Bishop Fenwick 9
Goalkeeper Lauren Vaccaro was a stalwart in net all night long for the Spartans, notching double-digit saves as she helped lead St. Mary’s to its first win of the season on Monday. Codi Butt led the way on offense with seven goals, while Mady Hentosh had one goal and four assists and Kate Grey scored two goals.
The Spartans (1-2) will travel to Austin Prep on Wednesday.
Peabody 10 Danvers 5
The sophomores led the way for the 3-0-0 Tanners (1-0-0 in the Northeastern Conference), with Colleen Crotty (five goals), Olivia Kiricoples (three goals) and Hailie Lomasney (two goals) all scoring multiple times. Senior Sarah Buckley also scored.
“We played great defense to limit Danvers to two second-half goals,” saidi coach Dennis Desrosiers.
The coach singled out junior Catherine Manning, freshmen Jordyn Collins, Aja Alimonte, Hayley Baker and Amber Kiricoples.
Keeper Olivia Lavalle had 11 saves, including two big ones late in the game.
Concord-Carlisle 15, Marblehead 11
It was a hard-fought game, but the Magicians couldn’t get over the hump at home against Concord-Carlisle on Monday. Marblehead was led by Lydia Bongiorno’s four goals and one assist, while Grace Arthur added three goals and one assist. Caroline Driscoll had two goals and one assist, Niamh Healy had one goal and one assist, and Hadley Carlton and Annie Ronan each had one goal. Goalie Maeve Caldwell had 13 saves in the loss.
“It was a great battle on the field today,” said Marblehead coach Annie Madden. “Concord-Carlisle is a great and strong program, and we will now learn from this game and continue to strengthen our confidence on the field. We have to play the best to beat the best.”
Marblehead will host Swampscott on Wednesday.
Winthrop 16, Matignon 9
Behind a stellar night from Emma Carleton (seven goals), the Vikings earned their second win on the early season. Twin sisters Maura and Jenna Dorr had great games in the midfield along with Sonedia Dahlquist-Martinez and Dani Zenilla, while goalie Fatma Tufa had 15 saves in net.
Winthrop (2-1) will host Malden on Wednesday.
BOYS LACROSSE
Bishop Fenwick 10, St. Mary’s 7
The Spartans had a solid day on offense, but still couldn’t notch enough goals to get the win on Monday. Christian Lebert scored three goals to lead the way, while Nick Napolitano had two goals and three assists. Brendan Laundry added one goal and two assists and Jaiden Moriello had one goal. Goalie Kaden Quirk had 13 saves in the loss.
For Fenwick, Derek DelVechhio logged a hat trick and Diego Alvarez-Segee scored two goals with an assist. Brian Harrington scored one goal and dished five assists, while Nick Muzi and Stefano Fabiano each scored one goal and logged one assist. Brandon Kenney and Robbie Favuzza each scored one goal. Favuzza’s was his first varsity goal.
St. Mary’s (1-2) will host Austin Prep at Manning Field on Wednesday. Fenwick (3-0) travels to Arlington Catholic Wednesday.
GIRLS TRACK
Everett 73, Revere 53
At Revere, Patriot winners were Liza Gonzalez, triple jump (27-6 1 1/2); Chloe Giordano, 100 hurdles (19.2); Stephanie Vu, 400 (69.4); Olivia Novoselsky, 800 (2:54.9); and Erika Cheever, mile (6:23.9).
Revere falls to 0-2.
Winthrop 81, Medford 53
At Revere, Viking winners were McKayla Norris, high jump (4-6) and 100 (13.2); Clare Nargi, long jump (14-0), Fiona McPhail, triple jump (28-9 1/2) and 400 (69.5); Marie Kate Pote, shot put (27-7); Gabby Hinchion, discus (74-11) and javelin (61-0); Beatriz Holzbach, 400 hurdles (72.2); Camilla Miranda-Llovera, 2-mile (13:14.8).

Revere 67, Everett 65
The Patriots won their first meet of the season in a tingling meet on their own track. Winners for Revere included Lucas Barbosa, high jump (5-2) and 110 hurdles (16.3); Kevin Bardhi, discus (88-5); Arthur Luis Lacerda, 400 (56.4); Cristian Acuna, 800 (2:16.0); Nicholas Alves, mile (5:07.4) and Jonathan Nushi, 2-mile.
Medford 67, Winthrop 60
At Revere High, the Mustangs won their season’s opener while the Vikings fell to 0-2.
Winners for Winthrop were Tyler Chiudina, javelin (100-even); Manoel Hollanda, 100 hurdles (20.9) and Patrick Haskell, 400 (56.8).
