School Sports Roundup: Marblehead girls basketball powers past Gloucester

The Marblehead girls basketball team opened up the 2019-2020 basketball season in style with a 49-11 win over Northeastern Conference foe Gloucester Friday night. 

Emily Clough led the offensive effort for the Magicians, notching a double-double with 14 points and 11 blocks. Maddy Lowy added seven points and two steals, while Maddie Erskine had six points, eight rebounds and four steals. Leila Walton had six points and 11 rebounds.

“It was a solid night for us and a great way to start the season,” said Marblehead coach Paul Moran. 

Marblehead (1-0) hosts rival Swampscott Monday night (7).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Classical 44, Salem 19

Amber Crayton had a big game for Classical with 13 points, while Jean Gupton-Morrison had a great all-around game with eight points, 13 rebounds and four steals. 

The Rams (1-0) host Winthrop Tuesday (7).

Academy of Notre Dame 56, Tech 42

Despite a 22-point outburst from Alondra Sanchez, the Tigers came up short in their season opener. Iranis Julio added eight points in the loss.

Tech (0-1) hosts Nashoba Valley Tech on Wednesday (5:30).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Greater Lowell 71, Tech 39 

Carlos Mateo scored 11 points and Yael Vizcaino added 10 points. 

Tech (0-1) travels to Essex Tech Tuesday (5:30). 

Gloucester 45, Marblehead 39

Sean Grady had 11 points and five steals in the loss for Marblehead. The Magicians (0-1) are back in action Monday (7) with a road game against Swampscott.

St. Mary’s 72, Williams 60

Sammy Batiste led the Spartans with 19 points and Josh Perez poured in 17. St. Mary’s (1-0) hosts Dracut Sunday (5:30).
