The St. Mary’s boys basketball team cruised to a 76-36 win over Dracut in its home opener Sunday night at Tony Conigliaro Gymnasium.
Dracut bumped St. Mary’s out of the Division 3 North state tournament last season.
Joey Abate led the offense with 22 points and Sammy Batiste added 14. Ali Barry contributed nine points off the bench, helping the Spartans open up a 40-11 lead at halftime.
“We played very well, we moved the ball, got the ball to open shooters and knocked down shots,” St. Mary’s coach Dave Brown said. “It was good to beat a team that had some success last year in the state tournament. They say it’s not a rivalry until both teams beat one another so maybe we have rivalry now between us and Dracut.”
St. Mary’s, 2-0, hosts New Bedford Tuesday (7).
