Make that two wins in a row for the Saugus girls basketball team as the Sachems defeated Beverly 44-35 on the road Thursday.
“It was a great team win,” Saugus coach Mark Schruender said. “Hats off to all of our kids. Beverly’s always tough. It was a tough game. You take points any way you can get them. Our kids battled.”
Jillian Ricupero scored 11 points and led Saugus’ defense, limiting one of Beverly’s top scorers.
Taylor Bogdanski scored nine points Shaylin Groark finished with eight. Freshman Samantha Shea knocked down a clutch 3-pointer off the bench.
“We had six different kids hit a 3-pointer. We had solid contributions from a lot of different players. Even with our bench, we love the energy that they brought.”
Saugus (2-1) travels to Everett Dec. 30.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Fenwick 55, Wakefield 45
Veronica Tache scored 16 points. Freshman Erica Lendall poured in 12 points. Annie Murphy logged a double-double at 16 points and 15 rebounds. Liz Gonzalez added six points and 14 rebounds.
Fenwick (1-0) hosts Catholic Central League and Division 4 powerhouse Cathedral Monday (6:30).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gloucester 69, Saugus 56
Top performers for the Sachems, who fell to 0-2 on the season, were Joe Lusso (22 points) and Christian Correa (15).
“We had a rough first half,” Saugus coach Mark Bertrand said. “We fell behind by 16. We were down eight in the third. We kept it close, we just couldn’t get over the hump. I give my guys a lot of credit. They could’ve packed it in but they kept fighting. We’re going to get it together. We’re going to keep working at it.”

English 101, Peabody 30
English improved to 2-0 with the win at Paul Cavanagh Field House.
Ademide Badmus led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. J.B. Nukeba scored 16 points with nine rebounds. Also reaching double-figures were Mason Jean-Baptiste (15 points), Lou Rivera (14) and Jarnel Guzman (13).
English travels to Acton-Boxboro Friday (7).
Joangel Lugo had nine points in the loss for Peabody, while Nick Soper had six points. The Tanners (2-1) travel to Masconomet Dec. 27.
Danvers 59, Winthrop 43
Winthrop’s top performers were Samir Hadria (15 points), Cam Conway (10) and Engjell Ramadani (nine).
The Vikings (0-1) host Georgetown Monday (7).
SWIMMING
Classical 102, Salem 64
Classical had no shortage of highlights in the win at Lynn Tech’s pool.
The Rams’ 200 medley relay team of Max Gonzalez, Jacob Lang, Adam Mariano and Daniel Puma took first place. Classical’s Sidney Finnigan and Zachary Westin finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 freestyle. Jacob Lang and Max Gonzalez went first and second, respectively, in the 200 individual medley.
Cate Hines, Sydney Porter and Kristen Johnston went 1-2-3 in diving. Adam Mariano and Max Gonzalez finished first and second in the 100 butterfly. Zachary Westin and Christian Flores finished first and second in the 100 freestyle. Jacob Lang finished first in the 500, followed by Shannon Dunnigan. Sydney Finnigan was the top performer in the 100 backstroke.
Gloucester 102, English 68
English took first in three events. Hannah Trahant won in diving, Mary Lawlor won the 100 backstroke (106.87) and the 200 free relay team of Lawlor, Trahant, Alyx Nelson and Ryan Curley finished first (2:02.85). Lawlor also took second in the 200 individual medley (228.64), qualifying for sectionals.
English’s back in the pool Jan. 2 against Danvers at Lynn Tech.

Swampscott’s Anton Vasquez (46′ 1/4) and Jackson Brigham (43′ 1/2) finished first and second in the shot put respectively. Najique Henry (55 meter, 6.5), Cole Hamernick (300 meter, 40.9), Jamie Godwin (600 meter, 1:35.6), Dylan Brawley (1000, 3:01.1), Michael Ferragamo (2-mile, 11:47.9) all took home first place finishes.
Amparo placed first in the 55 meter hurdles (8.9) while Swampscott’s Aidan McMaster (9.4) and Alexander Hankins took second and third.
Salem’s Trevor Beaudoin finished first in the high jump (5’8). Joey Wong (5:21.8) and Skyler Clawson (5:23) finished first and second in the mile.

Classical’s Cherish Nwoko finished first in the shot put (31’11 1/2) while Kenia Meijia won the 600 meter (2:00.1). Rachel Brennan (5:44) and Miriam Bamaca (13:32.3) finished first in the mile and 2-mile respectively.
