The Swampscott boys hockey team came up on the short-end of a rock’em-sock’em affair against Somerville Saturday at Veterans Memorial Rink, losing 6-5.
Trailing 5-0 going into the third period, the Big Blue scored five goals in the frame. The only problem was the Highlanders also scored to pull out a furious finish.
Drew Olivieri scored two goals and had two assists, while Conor Donovan scored a goal and notched three assists. Liam Locke scored two goals and had one assist, while Chris Russo chipped in one assist.
Jack Russo made 25 saves.
Swampscott fell to 9-7 overall and is 7-2 in the NEC.
CAL/NEC WRESTLING
Lynnfield/North Reading had its best finish in five years with a third-place effort. LNR winners were Timothy Leggett at 132 and Stuart Glover at 138 points.
NEC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Peabody’s Fred Koffi set a school record 6.47 in the 55-dash as the Tanner boys cruised to the team title with 106 points, beating runner-up Beverly easily, which had 66. Marblehead was third with 62 points, while Swampscott was fifth with 40.
Marblehead winners included Cam Heafitz, high jump (6-00); Godot Gaskins, 300 (35.44) and Loeden Rodriguez, 2-mile (10:04.45);
Swampscott winners included Anton Vasquez, shot put (46-02.75).
Peabody winners were Joel Lisona, hurdles (8:05); Antonio Craveiro, 600 (1:24.50);
In the girls meet, Peabody finished runner-up with 118 points to Beverly, which won with 121. Classical finished third with 32 points.
Peabody winners were Jolene Murphy, dash (7.54); Arlene Davilla, shot put (35-02.25); Fadima Kaba, 55 hurdles (9.35).
Classical’s Rachel Brennan won the mile (5:39.29).
The Tanners’ boys and girls team showcased their team depth, winning five of the six relays with the girls winning all three of their races and the boys taking two of three.
