NAHANT — Officials are searching to fill a mid-term opening on Nahant’s Planning Board.
Vacated in June by Gene Canty, who left to serve on Nahant’s Board of Selectmen following the town’s annual election, the seat will remain open until both boards vote on a new member early next month.
“We’re looking for someone who has experience in things like real estate,” said Selectman Josh Antrim, one of several town officials tasked with reviewing applicants. “Legal expertise is nice, and so is community spirit. It’s good to have some record of community involvement, but certainly that’s not necessary.”
The Planning Board — which consists of seven members normally elected to serve three-year terms — is in charge of local duties that include the town’s master plan, zoning bylaws, and subdivision requests.
An announcement from the town last week stated that section 3-13 of the town’s charter mandates new appointments will only remain effective until the date of the next town election, at which point the vacancy will be filled by ballot for the unexpired term of the previously vacant office.
“When we have a case like this, whoever we appoint needs to run again next April,” Antrim said.
Those interested in applying must email a cover letter and resume to the Board of Selectmen, the Planning Board, and Bobbie-Jo Blair by 5 p.m. July 20.
The joint meeting of the Planning Board and Board of Selectmen will take place Wednesday, Aug. 5. More information is available on the town’s website, nahant.org.
