SAUGUS — A four-foot tall ornament bearing the Sachem mascot has appeared on the Saugus Center Christmas tree in memory of beloved Saugus High School basketball coach Mark “Bird” Bertrand, who died Friday evening following an accident at his home.

The tribute, which was endorsed by state and local officials, including the Board of Selectmen, the School Committee, Town Manager Scott Crabtree, and State Representative Donald Wong, was carried out in honor of the man described by Saugus Middle High School principal Michael Hashem and SMHS athletic director Terri Pillsbury as “a true family man and a pillar of the Saugus community.”

In a Facebook post Monday, Board of Selectmen Chair Anthony Cogliano expressed his disappointment that the town was unable to hold a formal event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but said plans are in the works to host a dedication ceremony for Bertrand at a later date.

“This was the only way to do it without risking the health and safety of our residents,” he wrote. “Bird was simply too well-loved and respected to think we could keep it small.”

In an effort to give Saugus youth who benefited from Bertrand’s mentorship a chance to say farewell, the town’s travel basketball program is inviting anyone who has participated in any Saugus basketball programs to dress in Saugus basketball gear and join them in lining both sides of Lincoln Avenue at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The program is asking anyone who attends to wear a facemask and stand six feet apart from other families.

“His passing has and will continue to profoundly impact our school and athletic families,” said Hashem and Pillsbury. “The Bertrand family is widely recognized as the First Family of Saugus basketball and Mark’s presence and influence will be greatly missed by everyone (who) knew him.”

A wake will be held Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance will be limited.
