PEABODY — The Bishop Fenwick girls hockey team opened up its season in style, notching wins against a pair of Catholic Central League foes over the weekend. The Crusaders took down Bishop Stang, 4-3, on the road in its season opener on Saturday, then turned around and beat Archbishop Williams by a score of 4-2 at home on Sunday morning.
In Sunday’s win over Williams, Fenwick was relentless on the offensive end. The Crusaders outshot the Bishops by a margin of 42-16, but even then the game started with a 1-0 Williams lead. Fenwick sent 16 shots at Williams goalie Amy Donnelly in the first period, but none found the back of the net.
But the second period was different. Fenwick got things going when Shannon Nagy tied the score at 1-1 on an assist from Emma Perry. Shortly after, Catherine Salvo notched a powerplay goal on an assist from Gabby Davern. Nagy added her second goal of the game with 45 seconds to play in the second, and all of a sudden the Crusaders held a 3-1 lead going into the third.
Williams fought back a bit with a goal midway through the third period to make it 3-2, but Fenwick put the game out of reach on a goal from Davern to help the Crusaders coast to the 4-2 victory.
On Saturday, the Crusaders needed to come from behind to pull out a victory. Fenwick couldn’t get on the board until the second period, when Davern broke the drought on a dish from Perry and Salvo, then Nagy scored an unassisted goal to put the Crusaders back in the game.
In the third period, Davern tied the game on a shorthanded, unassisted goal before Abigail Bruner scored the game-winning goal to put the Crusaders over the edge.
In total, Davern led the way over the weekend with three goals and two assists. She is closing in on the 100-point mark for her career, as her total currently stands at 96 points (55 goals and 41 assists).
Nagy (three goals), Bruner (one goal, one assist), Salvo (one goal, one assist), Perry (three assists) and Lauren Diranian (one assist) also contributed on the offensive end for Fenwick over the weekend.
The Crusaders (2-0) now have a full week off before getting back on the ice against Matignon next Sunday morning (9) back at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink.
