School Sports Roundup: Marblehead volleyball survives to beat Masconomet in five sets

In a back-and-forth affair Tuesday evening on the road, the Marblehead volleyball team made the right plays at the right times in a 3-2 victory over Masconomet in a thrilling Northeastern Conference battle. The Magicians won by set scores of 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13. 

Keira Sweetnam had 10 kills and seven aces in the win, while Lilah Thompson had seven kills. Emma Lawler had five kills and added four aces from the serving line. Abby Schwartz and Isabel Wabno each had 15 digs, while setter Samantha Oberlander had 25 assists.

Marblehead (6-5) wraps up the season Thursday evening (5:30) at home against Danvers. 

VOLLEYBALL

Danvers 3, Swampscott 0

The Big Blue fell by set scores of 8-25, 24-26, 8-25 in the season finale. 

“The girls competed hard the whole way through,” said Swampscott coach Ryan Celli. “I’m so proud of all the work they’ve done this season. We’re looking to come back stronger next year.”

Swampscott finishes the shortened season with a 1-7 record.

BOYS SOCCER

Chelsea 3, Classical 2

Despite the loss Elzon Halimi and Kevin Medrano each scored one goal for Classical. Jair Alvarez and Mario De Leon each had one assist.

Classical (1-2) travels to Revere Thursday morning (10).

Somerville 4, Revere 2

Revere hosts Classical Thursday (10).

GIRLS SOCCER

Malden 4, English 0

English (0-1) plays on the road at Medford Thursday (10).

Revere 2, Somerville 2

Carolina Bettero scored both goals in the draw for the Patriots, while Jackie Zapata, Madeline Yanes and Sofia Chogri each had one assist. Samarah Paiva, Ari Pina, Giselle Salvador and Gisselle Sepulveda all played well defensively, while goalkeeper Camilla Perez played well in net.

Revere (1-1-1) takes on English Saturday (TBD).

GOLF

Winthrop 44, English 28

The Vikings opened up their season with a strong win on their home course at Winthrop Golf Club. 

Evan Smotrich played well in the No. 1 spot for the Vikings in the victory.

Winthrop (1-0) travels to Classical Thursday afternoon (4).

Alex McMillian played well for the Bulldogs in the loss.

English (1-2) hosts Malden Thursday (4).
