SAUGUS — A 48-year-old Tewksbury man was arrested and charged with robbing a bank on Broadway Monday afternoon, Saugus Police said.
Gary Lacey was charged with two counts of unarmed robbery.
Lacey is alleged to have passed a note to two tellers inside the Eastern Bank at 605 Broadway. Police said Lacey left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and then proceeded to run away toward the parking lot of a large retail store at 400 Lynn Fells Parkway.
Police had been alerted to the robbery shortly before 12:30 p.m. via a wireless alarm from Eastern Bank. While officers were on their way, they received an updated report from emergency dispatch, which confirmed there had been a robbery at the bank, police said.
Shortly after responding to the bank, the Saugus Police Department received an additional call for a suspicious man, who was asking people for a ride in the parking lot of 400 Lynn Fells Parkway; this parking lot is only a few hundred yards from the bank, police said.
Police located the alleged suspect, who was later identified as Lacey, in the parking lot. He was taken into custody following an on-scene investigation, police said.
Police recovered the cash that was allegedly taken from the bank. Lacey was charged with unarmed robbery as no weapon was displayed during the robbery and he was not in possession of any weapons at the time of his arrest, police said.
Lacey is scheduled to be arraigned in Lynn District Court on Tuesday.
