ARLINGTON — Behind a three-goal outburst in the final seven minutes of the third period, the St. Mary’s boys hockey team rallied from behind to notch a 3-1 victory over Arlington Catholic in a Catholic Central League game at Ed Burns Arena Wednesday night.
“We didn’t come out with our best over those first two periods, but the guys really responded and played well in that third period,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “Our veterans really stepped up to lead the way, and everyone followed from there. It was a great win against a really strong team.”
Daniel Domeniconi scored two goals in the victory for the Spartans, while Jake Desmarais notched one goal. Cam McGonagle, Seamus Foley, Jack Carpenter and Brady Bullock each had one assist in the win.
The win was symbolic of the growth that the young St. Mary’s team has exhibited over the course of the season, according to Lee.
“I think, as a young team, we knew coming into the season that there would be some growing pains that we had to work through,” said Lee. “But the guys have really persevered and continued to get better every day, and I think it’s really starting to show over these last few games.”
After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 15 minutes, Arlington Catholic was able to get on the scoreboard first behind a shorthanded goal midway through the second period.
With the Cougars leading 1-0 with seven minutes to play, St. Mary’s was able to tie it when McGonagle found Domeniconi out front to knot things up at 1-1.
Desmarais was able to score the eventual game-winning goal a few minutes later before Domeniconi sealed the victory with his second goal in the final two minutes of play.
St. Mary’s (6-6-3) hosts Bishop Feehan Saturday night (8:20) for its Senior Night.
“It’ll be great to honor the seniors and we know it’ll be a tough test after they beat us at their place last time,” said Lee. “I’m sure the guys will be motivated to go out there and get a win to keep this positive momentum going.”
