Thursday is set to be a special day for Saugus-Lynnfield Youth Hockey, as the program has been chosen as one of the recipients to participate in the TD Bank Pass Classic sponsored by the Boston Bruins.
Saugus-Lynnfield Youth Hockey was one of only 10 youth-hockey programs in all of New England chosen to participate.
“We applied back in September, and you never expect to hear back because it’s such a long shot,” said Saugus-Lynnfield Youth Hockey Registrar David Lucey.”
Along with a one-hour, youth-hockey clinic run by Boston Bruins Youth Development and Boston Bruins Alumni, the program was also given 100 tickets to a recent Boston Bruins game along with a $1,000 donation from TD Bank.
Former Boston Bruins players Tommy Songin and Lynnfield native Ken Hodge Jr. are scheduled to attend and assist on the ice with the clinic.
“It’s a huge deal for these kids to get to work with former professional hockey players, and even more of a big deal that they play for the Bruins,” said Lucey, who grew up in the area and played Lynn Youth Hockey as a kid. “Lynnfield has always been kind of a Bruins town, and my dad was actually friends with Ken Hodge Sr. We’re very proud as a community of our Bruins history.”
Lucey noted how big something like this is for the program, which helps feed both the high-school programs at Lynnfield High and Saugus High. The Pioneers are currently the No. 4-ranked team in all of Division 3, while Saugus ranks No. 25 in Division 4.
“There are so many places for kids to play now, so it’s really important that we continue to do things like this to keep driving interest and keep feeding those high-school programs,” said Lucey. “Both Lynnfield and Saugus are having great years, and almost every player on those teams came from Saugus-Lynnfield Youth Hockey.”
The clinic will be held at the newly renovated Kasabuski Arena Thursday, beginning with a group photo at 5:45 p.m. prior to the event, which will run from 6 to 7 p.m.
