WOBURN — Lynn Wyoma Softball got its second win of the Majors Sectionals, trampling Woburn 9-1 at Gonsalves field Thursday.
Lynn Wyoma now sits with a record of 2-0 in sectionals with only two games remaining, which, to Coach Jason Newhall, is an excellent sign of things to come.
“At 2-0, you cannot get much better. If we try to improve on things, I mean. All we can do is keep reaching for the top,” said Newhall.
Lynn Wyoma started early in the scoring department, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Angelina Owumi hit a tough grounder to second base with the bases loaded, scoring on Jianny Bernabel from third base.
After the top of the second, the game stayed steady at 1-0 Lynn Wyoma as both pitchers were on their game. Lynn Wyoma’s Adyson Newhall and Woburn’s Camryn Pendergast did not allow any runs in the third, and it looked like we had a close game on our hands.
However, as good as Pendergast was, it seemed like Lynn Wyoma finally got some timely breaks in the top of the fourth. Pendergast started the inning strong for Woburn with two straight strikeouts, then disaster in the infield struck.
A short pop-up by Isabella Veilleux was missed, and she reached base, then Owumi was walked. Another fielding error on a grounder got Gwen Protz on, and the bases were loaded.
Unfortunately for Woburn, Pendergast walked the next two batters to fall behind 3-0 before getting out of the inning.
“When I say we are good in the field, we have to make those plays in the field in order to help the pitcher; and I know we can make those plays,” said Woburn Manager Laura Rebelo.
Woburn would respond the next half inning scoring on a bases-loaded walk of their own, but it proved to be too little to combat the barrage of runs Lynn Wyoma put up in the top of the fifth.
Like the previous inning, the bases were loaded, and Protz was walked to give Lynn Wyoma a 4-1 lead, and then the insurance runs began. Kiley Schipilliti hit a nice two-RBI single to left-center field to make it 6-1.
Then came the dagger from Kaylee DiNicola, who hit a bomb over the left fielder’s head and made it all the way home with the help of a throwing error to drive in three and take a 9-1 lead.
Woburn threatened in the bottom half of the fifth, even getting the bases loaded, but Newhall kept her composure and got out of the jam striking out Juliana Novello.
“We left too many kids on. It was bases loaded twice and we just needed to get up there swinging and get a few key hits at that point,” said Rebelo.
Newhall then retook the mound and struck out the side to seal the 9-1 victory for Lynn Wyoma.
While Woburn lost the game, Rebelo said she was still proud of her team and the program as a whole.
“Since COVID, a lot of girls have not come back to softball, so I feel like we have really come a long way in a year,” said Rebelo.
She added, “I think after a year of them doing this, I see a huge improvement and can see it improving every game, which is great to see.”
After the win, Lynn Wyoma now looks to continue its winning ways for the remaining two games of sectionals.
“I think we are prepared to move on, and I hope we keep having some luck. I think the girls are ready to play and showed some resiliency when they had to,” said Newhall.
