SAUGUS — Art took center stage at the town’s public library Saturday afternoon, with a performance from the Rasa String Quartet and a display featuring the work of Eileen Estrich, a Revere-based photographer.

Both events were part of a broader celebration of the arts at the library, and one attendee estimated that roughly three dozen people braved the cold and light snow Saturday to take in the quartet’s performance. According to their website, the quartet “explores the musical space where classic and folk traditions intersect and influence one another.”

The string quartet features Kiyoshi Hayashi and Maura Shawn Scanlin on violin, Mina Kim on cello, and Emma Kondo Powell on viola. The Boston-based group was founded in 2019, and they currently serve as the ensemble in residence at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.

“Inspired by the connection between music and storytelling at the heart of folk traditions, Rasa String Quartet creates engaging and fresh programs that are approachable by a wide range of people, are inspired by a variety of different cultures, and highlight unknown composers,” the library wrote in an online post promoting the event.

The hour-long performance Saturday featured renditions of two of the four seasons of Buenos Aires, composed by Astor Piazzolla, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Pisachi (Reveal), and selections from Armenian Minutes, by Komitas Vardapet, among other works.

Audience member Phillippina Bouwhuis, of Saugus, praised the quartet’s performance and said they played a “nice variety” of music.

Bouwhuis said the musicians “deserved a much larger audience” than the one that gathered inside the library’s community room. Those who did attend seemed to enjoy the performance.

“They were fantastic,” Bouwhuis said.
