NEW YORK — Lynn native Alex Newell has been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for a production of “Shucked” on Broadway.
This makes Alex Newell the first nonbinary actor to be nominated for a Tony along with J. Harrison Ghee, who is nominated for Best Leading Role this year.
Alex Newell, who uses she/he/they pronouns, posted about the nomination Tuesday morning after attending the Met Gala Monday night.
“I went to the Met Gala at 8 p.m. and 13 hours later I was Tony Nominated!!!” the caption said.
Alex Newell, who attended KIPP Academy and graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School, has been singing and acting their entire life. They have performed at North Shore Music Theatre and Marblehead Little Theatre.
“Alex started singing when he was two years old. Music and acting is her thing,” Brenda Newell, the actor’s mother and Lynn resident, wrote in a statement to The Item.
After high school, Alex Newell went on to audition for “The Glee Project” and eventually got the role of Wade “Unique” Adams on “Glee.” They also played Mo on “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” In “Shucked,” Alex Newell plays the role of Lulu.
“What do you get when you pair a semi-neurotic, New York comedy writer with two music superstars from Nashville? A hilarious and audacious farm-to-fable musical about the one thing Americans everywhere can’t get enough of: corn,” the synopsis of the show said on Playbill.com.
Brenda Newell said she is very proud of Alex Newell’s Tony nomination.
“Alex works hard at her craft. Hard work pays off. Not to mention she absolutely loves what she does. One of my neighbors often talks about hearing Alex singing from her bedroom three houses down” Brenda Newell wrote. “I guess all the involvement with [North Shore Music Theatre] just set her up for where she is now.”
The Tony Awards this year will be held at United Palace in New York City on June 11.
