Runners cross the finish line at the 2022 Stride Along the Tide Race.

Striding for the Y in Nahant

NAHANT — A record-breaking amount of more than 300 participants are expected to run in the Demakes Family YMCA’s Stride Along the Tide 5K race at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13.

Starting at Lowlands Park on Nahant Road, runners will stride along a scenic route — to Black Rock Point, then down Castle Road before taking a left on Flash Road, down to Dorothy Cave, and finally looping back to Lowlands Park.

Sandy St. Louis, the marketing director for YMCA of Metro North, said that each year an average of 2,500 participants raise roughly $80,000 in 5K events. The money provides financial assistance for those who want to participate in YMCA of Metro North programs or attain membership.

“Our programs include sports for kids, pickleball for seniors, educational programs at our Y Academy and our summer camps. The financial assistance that we give to people is supported by all of these events and activities that we do,” St. Louis said. “Stride Along the Tide is one of the ways people can support the Y.”

Saturday’s road race is one of the YMCA’s four 5K events, with others in Saugus, Melrose, and Peabody. Those who wish to run in the 5K have until 8:15 a.m. Saturday to register for $35.

“It’s a great way to bring our community together in a fun and healthy activity that also supports a great cause,” St. Louis said. “We are certainly happy to be seeing all of our runners coming out and coming back in record numbers.”
