LYNNFIELD — A significant water break on Main Street near the Center Market stores was reported to the Lynnfield Center Water District on Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. A crew from the district responded to the break as soon as LCWD was notified.
LCWD Superintendent John Scenna said that the water break impacted the district and the entire water system.
“That section of the system is a 12-inch transmission pipe,” Scenna said. “It is one of our larger water-main pipes. Even though we had that area of the water system isolated, we lost a lot of water.”
Water services in all areas were restored Wednesday morning after the break was repaired overnight, but the system is still recovering.
“We lost over 650,000 gallons of water because of the break,” Scenna said. “We’re a water system that is fully reliant on pumping water from wells. Those wells have a limited capacity of what they can produce. So, it’s going to take a few more days to recover all of that water loss.”
While operators worked to isolate the damaged pipe, water pressure in the system started increasing again an hour after the break.
The reason for the break has not yet been determined.
“Our crew is working with the Reading Municipal Light Department and the local Department of Public Works to excavate the site,” Scenna said.
According to LCWD’s website, the possibility of water discoloration and poor pressure remains likely. In such instances, residents are urged to run their cold water first.
