LYNN — Nicole McClain will keep her councilor-at-large seat for a full two-year term, as she became the first Black woman to be elected to the City Council Tuesday.
The incumbent, who has served on the council since the death of Councilor-at-Large Gordon “Buzzy” Barton in April, won 3,630 votes, which was the second-largest amount of the four at-large incumbents.
“I can’t be more proud of the team that brought it all together,” McClain said. “It wasn’t just me, it was Lynn, it was all of Lynn, and I couldn’t be more honored.”
McClain is also the first Black woman to be elected to the city council.
“This is my hometown. It’s a big deal to me to be the first Black woman,” McClain said. “I know I will not be the last. I know I am knocking down barriers for so many people to come after me.”
McClain’s victory came after she trailed Donald Castle by more than 300 votes in September’s preliminary election.
However, on Tuesday, Castle was the fifth-highest vote-getter, capturing 2,931 votes.
The other incumbent at-large councilors in the race will also stay on the council. Brian LaPierre netted the most votes with 3,782, Brian Field finished third with 3,423, and Hong Net came in fourth with 3,385.
