Former Swampscott IRS agent indicted on tax fraud charges

April 17, 2024 by Benjamin Pierce

SWAMPSCOTT — Resident and former IRS agent Ndeye Amy Thioub was indicted this week by a federal grand jury on six counts related to tax fraud.

According to the office of District of Massachusetts acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy, Thioub was indicted on three counts of filing false tax returns and three counts of filing false tax returns as a United States employee.

In 2006, Thioub began working as an internal revenue agent for the IRS’s Large Business and International Division.

“Thioub planned and conducted examinations of tax returns using extensive and specialized knowledge of accounting techniques, practices, and investigative audit techniques to examine and resolve various tax issues of individuals and business organizations,” a press release from the Department of Justice reads. “As a result of her education, training, and experience, Thioub was highly knowledgeable about tax law.”

The indictment alleges that Thioub filed false tax returns in 2017, 2018, and 2019. In addition, she allegedly filed a Schedule C form reporting a loss from an import and export business she claimed to own. The reported loss from her business was then allegedly implemented in her personal tax forms, ultimately reducing her tax liability.

One charge of filing a false tax return could result in a prison sentence of up to three years, followed by one year of parole and a $100,000 fine if convicted. Being convicted of the same crime as an employee of the United States would result in the employee’s termination and a prison sentence of up to five years.

The Department of Justice could not confirm whether Thioub was an IRS employee at the time of her indictment.
