SWAMPSCOTT — The Public Library has been awarded a $30,000 grant which will help turn a portion of the library into a dynamic “maker space” equipped with numerous forms of innovative technology.
According to the press release announcing the grant, the new space will include devices such as a 3D printer, laser cutters, and a sewing machine. In addition, multiple computers equipped with design software will be available to use.
Programs will be held to help visitors who are not overly familiar with the technology learn how to use it. The programs will include Basic Electronics and Robotics, Sewing and Textile Arts, Introduction to 3D Printing, Digital Design and Fabrication, and Coding for Beginners.
Library Director Jonathan Nichols expects the space to have a major impact on the community.
“We are incredibly grateful to MBLC for this generous grant,” Nichols said. “This maker space will be a game-changer for our community, providing access to tools and resources that can spark creativity and innovation. It aligns perfectly with our mission to support lifelong learning and community engagement.”
He added that the space will be a STEAM hub supporting everyone from students to seniors who want to create.
The Library Services and Technology Act for the grant category Creative Communities was awarded to the Swampscott Public Library by the Massachusetts Library Board of Commissioners.
