To the editor:
I am writing to inform Swampscott citizens that on Thursday, Oct. 10, the Swampscott Historical Commission (SHC) unanimously voted to support the Community Preservation Act (CPA — Question 6) in Swampscott’s upcoming election on Nov. 5.
This important Act will help preserve our town’s historic resources, open spaces, and recreational areas for future generations. This vote is fully in keeping with our mission: to preserve and protect the town’s history and resources. As such, the commission’s activities include:
- Educating the community. The Commission educates the community about preservation issues and how preservation can benefit the town’s economy and property values;
- Preserving historically significant buildings. The Commission helps preserve historically significant buildings, such as Andrews Chapel, the Elihu Thomson House, and the Fish House.
We enthusiastically support the CPA because it will provide critical funding for historic preservation projects, allowing us to:
- Acquire and preserve historic resources;
- Restore and protect historic buildings and landmarks, such as the General Glover Farmhouse;
- Preserve historic districts and neighborhoods.
In addition to historic preservation, the CPA will also provide funding for:
- Expanding parks and trails;
- Supporting community housing initiatives;
- Preserving open spaces and natural resources.
The SHC believes that the passage of the CPA will help ensure that Swampscott remains a vibrant and unique place to live, work, and visit. The Commission is excited to see the positive impact that the CPA will have on our community. We encourage all residents to educate themselves about this important initiative and, most importantly, to vote on Nov. 5.
