PEABODY — The closure of Nordstrom in the North Shore Mall will affect 134 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed by the company.
The Peabody store will officially close at the end of the month and will be followed by the closure of their Braintree location on Mar. 8. All other Nordstrom stores in Massachusetts will remain open.
WARN, enacted in 1988 by the U.S. Congress, requires companies to give notice when they are planning to layoff 50 or more employees 60 days prior to the date they plan to close. That ensures workers have ample time to prepare for a job transition.
“The closure of Nordstrom in Peabody, resulting in the loss of approximately 134 jobs, is disappointing; however, Massachusetts maintains a resilient job market,” Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce President Deanne Healey said. “The state’s unemployment rate stands at 4.0%, reflecting a stable employment environment.”
According to the department store, the closure follows the decision to not renew their expiring license with the mall.
An agreement has already been reached for a DICK’s House of Sport to fill the space hosting Nordstrom. A similar move was made to replace the Nordstrom in the South Shore Plaza with a DICK’s Sporting Goods.
Compared with regular DICK’s Sporting Goods locations, DICK’s House of Sport is a 100,000+ square foot space that offers in-store experiences including a climbing wall, golf simulators, and multi-sport cages along with their usual sports accessories inventory.
“The sports products and interactive experiences featured at DICK’s House of Sport and DICK’S Sporting Goods will generate increased energy, customer traffic and revenue in these spaces,” said Mark Silvestri, president of development at Simon, the real estate investment trust that owns the North Shore Mall.
The North Shore Mall plans for a 2026 opening date of the new store, a schedule that, as stated by Healey, “will add temporary construction jobs initially, followed by a replacement of retail workers.”
